Texas Plaza
"Texas Plaza"
Decatur, Texas.

Recognizing a need for services for travelers, E. F. Boydston began in 1927 to develop his "Texas Plaza." He built a wooden shed and gas station, and offered camping spaces with fire pits for overnight stays. By 1930 Boydston had added three wooden cabins with garages. Eight years later he covered the exterior of all the buildings with chunks of petrified wood. More cabins with garages were added in 1935.

Americana Revival Fine Art Photography is a photographic collection of images of places and things characteristic of the American Culture as a whole. While to some, nostalgic, is not meant to be such. Americana Revival Fine Art Photography is not about reviving the old times. It is, however, about making our history, folklore and cultural heritage important once again— Important to our well-being as Americans. Americana Revival Fine Art Photography reminds us of where we have come from, and provides hints for a sustainable future.

What is more quintessential Americana than a bustling small town main street. The Rexall Drugstore, the City Cafe, all iconic Americana.

Good For Life, Fern Bluff, TX
"Good For Life" (Fern Bluff, Texas)
I have a tendency to hunt out ghost signs for photos. Not only do they convey a history of American brand advertising, they also tell us something about our human "delights" and how we shopped. Although I prefer the unrestored version, this restored one on the side of an old gas station in Fern Bluff, Texas states what almost every such sign suggested: "It's good for life."

barn & tractor
"Barn & Tractor
Until I was in 5th grade I lived in the city. Between 5th and 6th grade we moved to the country. It was that summer that I had my first opportunity to drive a tractor. Maybe that's why I take so many tractor pictures. Be that as it may be, a tractor sitting in front of a barn speaks of an American experience, one that has contributed as much, if not more, as America's industrial experience to our country's growth.

tin can water tank with windmill.
"Tin Can Water Tank & Windmill (Jarrell, Texas)
I was once told my an elderly pilot that the "tin can" water tank served as a wayfarer landmark as they flew across the country. I know that they certainly catch my eye as I drive across the open country. There is something about them that says, "Civilization!" And for many of our forbearers, these "tin can" water tanks were for them a mark of "civilization."

There's a Norman Rockwell-ish feel to this image. This is to me the epitome of the small town American West.

When we rode the rails
"When we rode the rails"
There was a time when steel rails connected Americans to a "life beyond," to family, to big-town markets and scenic wonders. Even riding the train was a cultural experience.
